City or out-of-town wedding?

How to choose the right venue for you.

At some point in most venue searches, the shortlist splits in two. One option is somewhere out of town, with a drive and a weekend away. The other is somewhere in the city, close to home and to most of your guests. Both can make for a great day. The right choice depends on who you're inviting, what you can spend, and how you want the celebration to feel.

Is it better to get married in the city or out of town?

Neither is better overall. Out-of-town weddings tend to suit couples who want a weekend-long celebration, have a smaller or more mobile guest list, and are drawn to a particular landscape. City weddings tend to suit couples whose guests are flying into Auckland from other countries, who have older relatives or young families attending, or who want guests to spend their time and money on the day rather than on getting there.

What are the pros and cons of an out-of-town wedding?

Pros:

  • It feels like an occasion. Guests travel, stay and celebrate together, often across a whole weekend.

  • Rural and coastal venues can offer scenery and space that's hard to find in the city.

  • Some venues have accommodation on site or nearby, which keeps everyone in one place.

Cons:

  • Guests pay for travel and at least one night's accommodation, so some may decline.

  • Long drives can be hard on elderly guests and families with young children.

  • Suppliers based in the city may charge travel fees or need accommodation.

  • Getting guests home at the end of the night needs planning: shuttles, designated drivers or nearby beds.

What are the pros and cons of a city wedding?

Pros:

  • Guests arrive easily and can get home the same night, with no overnight stay needed.

  • Travelling guests can stay central and see some of the city while they're there.

  • You have a wider choice of photographers, florists and other suppliers, often with lower travel costs.

  • You spend less time on the road between ceremony, photos and reception, and more time with your guests.

Cons:

  • Some city venues feel urban, so the right setting matters more if you want an escape.

  • Weekend traffic and parking can complicate arrivals. Check both before you book.

  • Without a shared overnight stay, the celebration usually wraps up in one evening.

Questions to ask yourselves before you choose

  • How many guests would need to travel, and could they afford it?

  • Who on your list would find a long trip difficult?

  • Do you want one big day, or a weekend with welcome drinks and a recovery brunch?

  • How will guests get home, and who's organising it?

  • What will supplier travel and accommodation add to your budget?

Can a city wedding still feel like an escape?

Yes, if the setting does the work. Look for water, gardens or trees, and a venue that maximises these surroundings once you're inside. For example, Ōrākei Bay sits on the edge of Ōrākei Basin, about seven minutes from the CBD, among pōhutukawa and landscaped gardens. Guests turn off Orakei Road and arrive at the water's edge.

How do guests get to and from a city wedding?

Plan the end of the night as carefully as the arrival. Check how much on-site parking there is, whether public transport runs late, and whether taxis and rideshares can pick up easily from the door. At Ōrākei Bay there's 50 free on-site parking spaces, and Ōrākei train station is a 2 minute short walk away.

Where do guests stay for a city wedding?

In Auckland, the CBD, Parnell and Newmarket all have a range of hotels within a short drive of most city venues. List a few on your wedding website so travelling guests can book early, especially if your date clashes with a major event.

What does a city wedding day look like?

A typical day might start with a late-afternoon ceremony outdoors, followed by drinks and canapés as the light changes, then dinner and dancing inside. At Ōrākei Bay, that means a ceremony in the Waterside Garden, drinks overlooking the basin, dinner and speeches in the Gallery, then dancing and late night celebrations in the Waterside Bar. At the end of the night, everyone gets home without a long drive.

Quick answers
